#destinationTHAILAND and why it's a can't miss in your 20s

Updated: Feb 26, 2018

Quite often, we get asked why we made Thailand ground zero for Now or Never Trips. If you’ve been to Thailand, then you already know.

I’ve been obsessed with Thailand since I first went in August, 2015 (not counting when I was 12 and went with my parents…VERY different trips). I returned in November, 2016 and spent nearly a month traveling SE Asia. Even on my second trip, there were so many things I couldn’t have planned for or expected. Now, it seems like everyone wants to go or is planning to go to Thailand. I can confidently say that both of my trips were the best of my life, and I want to share a glimpse of my experience in anticipation of #destinationTHAILAND.

The Food

If you love Thai food then guess what, you’ll love Thai food in Thailand. It’s better than anything I’ve ever had in the US or abroad. You’d think it would get old, but even after a month in Asia I was still eating Pad Thai and Massaman Curry every day. I even learned to cook my favorite dishes from a Thai Master Chef (I think that’s what he called himself, most of what he said was lost in translation).

The Shopping

I’ve never been a fan of shopping. I am a fan, however, of elephant pants, floral shirts, and negotiating. I learned the hard way that it’s a rookie move to pack many clothes for your adventure. You’ll leave Thailand with so many shirts, hats, and pants with elephants on them that you will need to check a bag on the way home. Not only are the clothes insanely cheap, but once you embrace the Thai life you’ll actually enjoy spending 10 minutes negotiating and haggling with store owners. After your victory, you’ll calculate that your negotiation skills managed to save $1.50 US for that neon elephant tank top you had to have for the full moon party. Worth it.

The Parties (Full Moon Anyone?)

The parties are unlike anything I’ve experienced in the world. The Full Moon Party in Ko Pha Ngan is ranked one of the top 10 parties in the world for good reason, but I dare say the nightly beach parties in Koh Phi Phi are equally as good. Just a quick look inside an average night:

  • Fire spinners line the beach outside Slinkys Beach Club in Koh Phi Phi. These tiny shredded athletes practice spinning from the time they can walk, and are basically Thai celebrities.

  • Every pre-party on the beach involves buckets of alcohol and lots of fire: a limbo bar, a fire jump-rope, or fire poi you can try your skills/luck with. Luckily things never go wrong, but if they did medical attention is quite cheap in Thailand. So I heard.

  • Meet people from all over the world.  We made friends from Isreal, UK, Ireland, Australia, and dozens of other countries. I even met a guy who lives near me in San Francisco who flies out every month to DJ the Full Moon Party. You’ll start the night as strangers and leave the trip as best friends. I still keep in touch with plenty of them to this day.

  • The Full Moon Party, Waterfall Party, and Jungle Experience Party. I can’t even begin to do these justice, but YouTube them and you’ll get the idea. Some of the best parties I’ve ever been to in my life.

  • Bars sell blended “shroom shakes.” Never tried them, but I heard they are great for digestion.

The Animal Interaction

Everyone knows animal pics dominate Insta. What more is there to say?  From feeding and wrestling an adorable baby elephant, to having your hat stolen by a playful monkey, to snuggling a roaring tiger, you can interact authentically with all sorts of wildlife. Let the likes roll in. (We always make sure that a wildlife park we are visiting and supporting treats the animals in a humane way, ei elephant orphanage/sanctuary where hooks and riding cages are never used)

I only wanted to give you a taste of my Thai experiences that have turned into some of my best memories. The best part is that everyone’s story will be unique. Leading up to #destinationTHAILAND I’ll continue to write blog posts to help prepare you for your Thailand experience, as well as Now or Never’s future adventures.  We can’t wait to toast with you under the Full Moon and celebrate living for Now. Make sure to reserve your spot today at the RESERVE tab on the top of our home page. Until next time!
